Merry Christmas

who-should-eat.jpgI put together this picture this evening because I was inspired when I saw an incredibly fat dog today. I honestly do not understand pets in light of how much poverty there is in the world. Dog spas make me want to scream. I've even seen dog dishes that purify their water continuously. Those would sure be appreciated by some people without clean water. I don't understand our culture's obsession with its animals. In my opinion, animals are tools. If they're not useful then they shouldn't get fed before people get fed. I'll make sure that I don't alarm anybody out there too much though and say that I do think that we need to treat animals humanely. I just think that people should always be fed before non-useful animals.

Amen! Rose, I know you know this, but in case anyone reads the comments on your blog, I'll add my 2 cents. I lived in Mexico for six months, working with the poorest of the poor, then came back to Canada and was offered a job at a vet clinic. It blew me away to see people spend tens of thousands of dollars on surgeries and procedures for their dogs, when I had just seen people who couldn't even afford insulin to control their diabetes (something that many animals in North America are given on a daily basis). What the heck is wrong with this world?
There was a newspaper article about people recently protesting against animal cruelty outside a KFC. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's right to mistreat animals, but where are their priorities? Go protest at the Purdy's chocolate factory or Rogers sugar, or pretty much any store, where their products are made at the expense of human lives, forget the chickens!
I think that was more like three or four cents, but I'm done now.

Last summer, my husband of 10 years told me he didn't love me anymore and wanted a divorce. Now I live alone. I do not/cannot have children so my dog is a great comfort to me. If it weren't for my dog, I would have slashed my wrists/jumped off a bridge/blown my brains out several months ago. Don't judge people who care about their animals. Not everyone is lucky enough to be surrounded by loving family. Some of us get by the best way we can.

You are so right! Families who can't afford a third or fourth child seem to be able to afford all sorts of other things... hmn... :)

Proof of indoctrination. You only see and hear one side. This isn't spirituality, it's a cult. Shame on you all.

Hmm... So thinking about the consequences of our actions, the world as a whole, misplaced priorities and the suffering of others is "proof of indoctrination" and shows you that Rose can "only see and hear one side" and is part of a cult? I suppose your alternative of getting mad at people who point out gross inequality is enlightened, open-mindedness. Your comment doesn't make any sense to me.

There are always too sides to an image. Making sweeping generalizations about others based on the actions of a few leaves little room for dialogue and creates polarization - something organized religion does well. Your arguments are not enlightened either. Mahatma Gandhi said “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” There is room for generosity and compassion for all living things.
